Plans to impeach the deputy governor of Ondo state has met a roadblock following the decision taken by the Chief Judge of the state.
Moves by the Ondo State House of Assembly to impeach the defected deputy governor has been rejected by the Chief Judge of Ondo State, Justice Olanrewaju Akeredolu.
The Justice made this known in a letter she wrote to the House of Assembly in response to a directive that she should constitute a seven-man impeachment panel to probe the state’s Deputy Governor, Hon Agboola Ajayi.
The Chief Judge in her response rejected the request on the ground that the two-third majority required by the 1999 constitution for setting up such a probe panel was not formed in the house of Assembly.
Only 14 out of the 26 members of the Assembly signed the impeachment notice with nine members dissociating themselves from the impeachment plot.

The nine members have also written a letter to the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Akeredolu, dissociating themselves from the ongoing plans to impeach the Ondo deputy governor of the state.
The lawmakers are Rt. Hon. Iroju Ogundeji (Deputy Speaker), Hon. Jamiu Sulaiman Maito, Hon. Rasheed Olalekan Elegbeleye, Hon. Tomide Leonard Akinribido and Hon. Samuel Edamisan Ademola.
Others are Hon. Favour Semilore Tomomewo, Hon. Festus Akingbaso, Hon. Adewale Williams Adewinle and Hon (Barr.) Torhukerhijo Success.

A man has confessed to fatally shooting his ex-wife's lover after catching the two in bed hours after divorce.
A man in the United States has been arrested and charged after shooting and critically injuring his newly-estranged wife's lover.
It was gathered that the Indiana man took the violent action after finding the amorous pair in bed together.
Last week, officers with the Marion Police Department responded to a home in the 500 block of East Highland Avenue, where they were met by 34-year-old Robert Beck.
According to police, Beck informed the officers that he had shot someone and was the one who called 911 to report the shooting.
Upon entering the house, police found the victim, identified as 51-year-old Brian Eccles, suffering from gunshot wounds to his chest and left arm.
Beck's wife, Jodi Beck, 35, and the couple's two children, ages 7 and 11, were also present inside the home at the time of the incident.
Responding officers administered first aid to Eccles until paramedics arrived and transported him to Marion General Hospital. He was later airlifted to a hospital in Fort Wayne in critical condition.
During the investigation, police learned that Robert and Jodi Beck had separated earlier in the day.

The jilted husband had left the couple's home, then returned later to find Eccles in the bedroom with his estranged wife.
'A confrontation occurred and Beck shot Eccles with a 380 caliber handgun,' according to a press release from the police.
Officers on the scene recovered the weapon and arrested Beck on a charge of felony aggravated battery. His bond was set at $30,005.

A former boss of NNPC charged for money laundering has insisted that $9.7m found in his house were gifts.
A former Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation boss, Mr. Andrew Yakubu facing money laundering charges on Wednesday told the Federal High Court in Abuja that the $9.7million and £74, 000.00 the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) found in his house in 2017, was gifted to him.
Yakubu, in his defence, said he received the monies in tranches of not more than $10, 000 and not more than £5, 000.
The ex-NNPC boss who testified as his witness told the court that people gave him monetary gifts on occasions such as birthdays, thanksgiving services, and other celebrations he hosted after he left service.
Recall that the EFCC through its whistleblower policy raided Yakubu’s guest house situated at Sabon Tasha, Kaduna State, and recovered funds which were in foreign currencies.

The EFCC said it discovered the sum of $9.7million and £74,000 that the ex-NNPC boss hid in a fireproof safe inside the house.
A Federal High Court in Kano had on February 13, 2017, issued an interim order that forfeited the recovered monies to the federal government.
Even though the EFCC filed a six-count criminal charge against Yakubu who was the ex-NNPC boss between 2012 and 2014, the court, on May 16, 2019, struck out counts 5 and 6 of the charge based on a no-case-submission that was made by the Defendant.
After an appeal by Mr Yakubu, the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal further struck out counts 1 and 2 of the charge and ordered him to open his defence with respect to only counts 3 and 4 of the charge.
Resuming trial on Wednesday, the Defendant mounted the witness box to narrate his own side of the story.
Led in evidence by his lawyer, Mr. Ahmed Raji, SAN, the ex-NNPC boss said:
“Yes my lord, I confirm that the monies were contained in a safe taken from my property.

“As I stated in my statement with the EFCC, the money found in the safe is mine. The money was not received in bulk. It was received in tranches of not more than $10, 000. 00 and not more than £5, 000. 00 pounds.

“Substantial part of that amount was given to me after I left service. It was given to me on such occasions as birthdays, thanksgiving services, and other celebrations that I hosted after leaving my office.

“I also hosted the marriages of my daughters. In fact, over 98% of the money came from gifts.

“The purpose of keeping the money was to think of business ventures I will embark on, but it was not my intention to go into a business investment without going through a financial institution.

“Since the money was given to me unexpected, I kept the money in safety, in a safe, pending when I decide on a specific business venture to embark on. And as soon as the decision is crystalized, the business would be funded through the financial institutions”.

“For over 25 years, I had reason by virtue of my schedule to travel to many parts of the world. I was entitled to estacodes in United States Dollars.

“Any saving I made during the trip, I came back and saved. The other 2% of the funds recovered from my safe was from such savings I made from travels.
During cross-examination by the prosecution counsel, Mr. M.S. Abubakar, the ex-NNPC boss told the court that he joined NNPC in 1980 and became the Managing Director of a subsidiary of NNPC Warri Petrochemical & Refining Company in 2007.
“I was appointed the Executive Director in charge of Exploration and Production in 2011 at NNPC headquarters.
“I became the Group Managing Director of NNPC in 2012 and retired in 2014”.
“I was told that EFCC stormed into my property, broke into my room, took the safe and asked my brother to accompany them to Kano.
“When I reported to EFCC’s office in Kano, my brother was there”.
According to the ex-NNPC boss, a total of four statements were made to the EFCC.
Meanwhile, an attempt by counsel to the EFCC to cross-examine a document before the court marked as Exhibit-J was resisted by the defence lawyer who insisted that it related to counts of the charge that were struck out.
The judge, Justice Ahmed Mohammed adjourned the case to July 22 for EFCC’s lawyer to respond and for further cross-examination of the Defendant.

He made this statement at the investigative hearing on the N40 billion corruption allegation against the commission.
According to PREMIUM TIMES, the acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Kemebradikumo Pondei, has admitted that the commission spent N1.5 billion for staff as ‘COVID-19 relief funds’.

He made this statement at the investigative hearing on the N40 billion corruption allegation against the commission.

The Senate had on May 5 set up a seven-man ad-hoc committee to investigate the “financial recklessness” of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the commission.

The lawmakers said, within the last three months, the commission has spent over N40 billion of the commission’s fund ”without recourse to established processes of funds disbursement which has opened up further suspicion among stakeholders of the Niger Delta Region.”
They also faulted the IMC’s ”arbitrary use of executive power in an alleged wrongful sacking of management staff without recourse to established civil service rules and practice with the aim of allegedly concealing the fraudulent financial recklessness they have committed.”
Mr Pondei and other delegates from the commission appeared before the committee on Thursday for the hearing.

Part of the audit report read out by the chairman of the committee, Olubunmi Adetunmbi, said N3.1 billion was spent as COVID-19 funds between October 2019 and May 2020.

In the report, the lawmaker said ”N10 million was paid to one person, N7 million to two people, N5 million to three people, 148 people took N3 million each, 157 people got N1.5 million each, 497 people got N1 million each and 464 people were paid N600,000 each.”

Another N475 million was given to the police to purchase face masks and hand sanitisers, he added.

Responding to questions regarding the COVID-19 Relief Fund paid to NDDC staff, the MD said ”only N1.5 billion was used to take care of staff” despite being paid their salaries.

He explained that part of the fund was for the youth of Niger Delta.

”The youth were given palliatives to help cushion the effect of the pandemic on the people. The youth were idle and to avoid violence, they were paid,” he said.

“Five million for youths and five million for women and five million for people living with disabilities in each senatorial district,”
 he said.

He said ”the remaining fund was spent on staff of the commission.”

“We used it to take care of ourselves. We are NDDC, we need to take care of ourselves too,”
 he said.

He further explained that the IMC inherited debts upon assumption of office ”that needed to be cleared on time.”

He said the previous management owed hotels and had unpaid electricity bills of about N26 million.

When asked why the police was given N475 million, Mr Pondei said a request was made from ”the high command of police and the management took a look at it and approved it.”

He explained that the money ”was an intervention and the NDDC is expecting a report as to how the money was spent.”

Meanwhile, the acting deputy director, projects, Cairo Ojougboh, added that the money given to police is for nine states of the Niger Delta region.

The investigative hearing will continue on Friday, the chairman said.

New cases of the unidentified pneumonia have been increasing significantly since mid-June across the country.

A new "unknown pneumonia" that is potentially deadlier than the novel coronavirus has reportedly killed more than 1,700 people this year in the Central Asian country of Kazakhstan, according to a warning issued by Chinese officials Thursday.
"Kazakhstani Health Department and other agencies are conducting comparative research and have not defined the nature of the pneumonia virus," said the Chinese Embassy in Kazakhstan in a statement to its citizens there.
New cases of the unidentified pneumonia have been increasing significantly since mid-June across the country, said the embassy, adding that in some places, authorities are reporting hundreds of new cases a day.

The rise has so far been concentrated in the regions of Atyrau, Aktobe and Shymkent, which together have almost 500 new cases and more than 30 critically ill patients, said the embassy statement, citing local media.
The disease has killed 1,772 people this year, some of whom were Chinese citizens, according to the embassy. 628 of those deaths took place in June alone. "This disease is much deadlier than Covid-19," said the statement.
The number of pneumonia cases in the capital city Nursultan have more than doubled this June from the same time last year, according to Kazakhstan's prominent news agency Kazinform, which cited official data.
"Up to 200 people are admitted to hospitals every day. Over the last few days some 300 people diagnosed with pneumonia were taken to hospitals a day. Besides some receive treatment at home," said the head of the Nursultan healthcare department, Kazinform reported.
The Chinese embassy warned residents in the region to limit how much they went outside, and to avoid crowded public areas. It also encouraged preventative measures like wearing a mask, disinfecting spaces, washing hands frequently, and allowing good air circulation in indoor spaces.
CNN has been unable to independently verify the Chinese Embassy report and has reached out to Kazakhstan's Ministry of Healthcare for further details.
The warning comes as Kazakhstan continues to battle a rise in Covid-19, which has infected 53,021 people and killed 264 people so far, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The Oyo State Government has said schools will remain open even as the federal government warned against such due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Students preparing to write the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will have the opportunity to do so unless the West African Examination Council says otherwise.

Commissioner for Education, Olasunkanmi Olaleye in the state while maintaining that schools will remain open, said that the directive by the the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu that schools in the country will not participate in this year's WASSCE and should remain shut can only be enforced in Federal Government schools.

The Commissioner for Education also mentioned that schools have re-opened in Oyo State and are in high compliance with safety protocols necessary for re-opening.

He also said that pending an official statement from the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and Governor Seyi Makinde, Oyo schools will remain re-opened till then.

He said, “We have resumed in Oyo state and you must have seen the level of compliance to COVID-19 protocols by our schools. If you go to our schools, you will see that our senior students are still learning and the preparation for WAEC is ongoing. The examination is part of educational development. So the state government will assess the situation especially because of the fact that WAEC is an integral part of educational development hence it cannot be ignored.

“WAEC is a regional examination that involves five countries so we are waiting for the reaction of WAEC. The state government will then assess the situation.”

Magu is still being interrogated by the Justice Ayo Salami-led Presidential panel along with seven of his aides.

Obviously sensing that the Presidency may keep him in detention indefinitely until he answers allegations made against him by the Attorney-General, embattled Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, may go on hunger strike.

According to Vanguard, it was gathered, on Thursday, that some politicians and other wealthy Nigerians and foreigners, who alleged that they were duped by Magu and some operatives of the EFCC, are said to have started forwarding petitions on how they were coerced to part with huge sums of money and property under the guise of recovering ill-gotten wealth.

Magu, still being interrogated by the Justice Ayo Salami-led Presidential panel along with seven of his aides, reportedly got into trouble after information got to the Presidency about some of his dealings both in and outside the country.

The informants, according to sources, gave detailed information that prompted a shocked Presidency to immediately order his arrest, while the presidential panel was set up.

According to sources, people in rarefied circles of power, in and outside the country put together the details and delivered to the Presidency, prompting his arrest.

A Presidency source, Thursday night, said that Magu may not be released from detention until he responds satisfactorily to all allegations against him.

The source told Vanguard: “You are aware that they (detectives) have searched his house. Detectives that carried out the search combed his house. It was after the search that they arrested seven of his aides as part of the probe.

“Justice Salami is simply carrying out stern instructions from the Presidency over the issue of Magu and it was after he discovered that it will be virtually impossible to grant him bail that Magu started threatening to go on hunger strike, with a view to drawing public sympathy.

“However, it was learned that when the Presidency got information about his plans to go on strike, in insisted that the embattled EFCC acting chairman will not be released until he returns all the money he was accused of misappropriating.”

Hushpuppi, who boasts of over 2.4 million followers on social media, was known to always flaunt his ostentatious lifestyle.

Forbes, the world-famous American business magazine, has said alleged international fraudster, Ramon Abbas aka Hushpuppi, was not on its list of World’s Billionaires.

Hushpuppi, who boasts of over 2.4 million followers on social media, was known to always flaunt his ostentatious lifestyle.

Huhspuppi boasts of many luxury cars including two Rolls Royce, a Maybach,  a Bentley, a Ferarri, Mercedes G Wagon, and many more, some of which were seized when he was arrested by the Dubai Police in the United Arab Emirates last month before he was extradited to the US.

The Nigerian, who is currently facing charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering, among others, in the United States, used strictly private jets for international travel where he videos himself consuming expensive champagne and food.

Some of the photos of his travels he posted on social media showed him reading copies of Forbes magazine.

The magazine famous for listing richest people on earth including Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, amongst others, however, said in an article on Thursday that Hushpuppi was not on its list of World’s Billionaires.

“Forbes does not currently include Abbas on our list of the World’s Billionaires,”
 it said.

The magazine, which said richest people on earth are not immune to the coronavirus, said there were over 2,095 billionaires in the world worth over $8 trillion, but Abbas, who was accused of committing over N168 billion scam was not one of them.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Abbas is alleged to have attempted to dupe an English Premier League football club of £100m (N48.4bn).

FBI said should Hushpuppi be convicted, he risks spending 20 years in jail.
